This guidance applies to both new recruits to acquaint them to the RS discipline and to existing staff as they undertake work in equipment areas that are new to them. It is also intended to inform those not directly involved in the topic, such that they have a better understanding of the rationale of how LU rolling stock systems & equipment have evolved and to enrich understanding across LU so that those involved in rolling stock procurement, specification production and project delivery have a greater understanding.
The content is set out in a simple, non-technical or systems based, alphabetical order and, from Sec 3.2 onwards, the final part of each Section informs about the practical experience of that system.
The purpose of this guidance is to inform readers of the principles and operation of rolling stock types and also explain the good and bad experiences in deployment of various equipment designs across rolling stock fleets, such that future mistakes can be avoided as much as possible.
This guidance supports the understanding and effective application of the requirements given in LU standards S1180 and S2180.
The content is structured in 4 ‘Parts’;
Part A covers the history and background to inform on rolling stock development,
Part B explains the rationale behind various ‘requirements’ in Standard S2180. It repeats any ‘risks’ listed in sections of S2180 to give the reader an understanding of the context of the requirements and the risks the standard is attempting to mitigate. Hence, the information in this guidance can be understood in that context.
Part C provides information pertinent to the particular notes in S2180 which refer the reader to this supporting guidance document.
It is acknowledged that there is additional material to add, particularly regarding the latest stocks (2009TS and S Stock), and some of the past experience from the suite of trains from 1967TS onwards. Part D forms the basis for this material but is not yet populated.
This guidance is not mandatory, though it provides a summary of lessons learnt and issues which have been experienced in the past. Its aim is to provide information that will help to avoid repeating mistakes which have previously been made.
