This Standard Test Method sets out the method for:

(a) The calibration of a nuclear surface moisture-density gauge using standard blocks.

The calibration equation from the standard density blocks defines:

(i) The relationship between density count ratio and density for direct transmission measurement (see Note (1))

(ii) The slope of the density calibration equation for backscatter measurement. The intercept of the density calibration equation for a material type is determined from actual measurement of field density (see Note (2))

The calibration equation from the standard moisture blocks defines the slope of the water calibration equation. The intercept of the water calibration equation for a material type is determined from actual measurements of field water content (see Note (2)).

(b) The checking of density calibrations.
