Scope:

Scope of the literature review

The following topics were initially to be reviewed:

1. incidence of neoplasia and cancer, primarily in teleost fishes but also in lower aquatic animals consumed by man. In practice, the latter group was defined as bivalve molluscs;

2. relations of incidences of cancer in fish to industrial pollution;

3. identification of carcinogenic or mutagenic substances in fish, especially heavy metals and hydrocarbons;

4. fish models and laboratory techniques for the identification and quantification of carcinogenic substances;

5. effect of neoplasia and cancer in fish ecology, e.g. reproduction, teratogenesis, alterations of population structure, effects on fisheries, etc.;

6. relationship between incidence of human cancer and fish cancer or contamination;

7. neoplasia or cancer resulting from biomagnification of pollutants in a fish-mammal food chain and models for study.

However, there was little or no published information on some of those. Specifically: (1) there is no adequate theory describing a mechanism by which heavy metals may be associated with the induction of neoplasia in fish or shellfish; (2) the ecological effects of neoplastic diseases on fish' populations have not been studied in a systematic way and are generally unknown; O ) areas included in six and seven above have not been addressed adequately in existing scientific publications. Consequently, those topics were omitted.

Thus, the broad objectives of this review were to review critically, the existing published literature on cancer and cancer-like diseases in fish and shellfish and to evaluate the possible relationships between environmental pollutants and the appearance and development of neoplasms or cancer-like diseases in aquatic animals.
