This Handbook applies to all tracks and structures on LU running lines and in depots and sidings.

It covers the inspection, maintenance and approval of clearances and the requirements for places of safety on the track.

This Handbook replaces Section 4 of Handbook 14.

Purpose

The purpose of this Handbook is to provide general information about the need to maintain clearances between trains, and between trains and fixed equipment and infrastructure.

It is particularly aimed at persons new to the rail industry, although it also provides useful guidance to experienced personnel.

This document supports the use of LU Category 1 standard 1-156 which should be consulted for greater detail.
