Organization: MODUK
Publication Date: 19 March 1999
Status: inactive
Page Count: 31
scope:

This Interim Standard, when used in conjunction with Def Stan 00-56 (or equivalent), specifies the Requirements for SREH in Defence Equipment. This Interim Standard provides guidance on the acquisition and use of software tools employed in the design, test, maintenance and replacement of SREH. The Requirements for Safety Related Software in Defence Equipment are specified in Def Stan 00-55. Safety related firmware is covered as follows : all software embedded in SREH is to conform to Def Stan 00-55 unless the SREH conforms to this Interim Standard and is subject to exhaustive test.

It is the intention of this Interim Standard to show how evidence of conformance to safety principles should contribute to the seamless overall System Safety Case required by Def Stan 00-56. While these same safety principles apply to system integration issues, including those associated with the integration of software and hardware, direct consideration of system integration is outside the scope of this document.

This Interim Standard covers both components acquired from outside a particular project (i.e.: as COTS or through hardware reuse) and components designed specifically for the project. It also recognises that most hardware design involves the use of acquired items in the form of development tools, component libraries, ASIC substrates etc.

This Interim Standard covers conventional electronic hardware, defined as those electronic circuits which can be fully characterised in the time domain, which excludes for example high frequency and microwave systems normally characterised in the fi-equency domain. The document covers digital and analogue electronic hardware, consisting of any combination of discrete components and integrated circuits.

This Interim Standard covers the selection of the hardware manufacturing process as part of the development process. However it is outside the scope of the document to cover the process of hardware manufacture.
