Scope:

Wood yard operations may purchase logs or chips on either a volume basis or on a weight basis. Therefore, for the purposes of cost and inventory control it is important to know the relationship between the two measurements. In the pulp mill, knowing the relationship between volume and weight will assist in determining digester loading and chemical charge. By modifying the size of the sample to fit the container, this procedure may be used to determine the basic density of wood in the form of disks, billets, or chips.
