Scope:

Test Method - This method describes the procedure for determining the room temperature long time tensile creep for all types of aluminum electrical conductors used in the construction of overhead power lines. Also included is the procedure for interpreting and applying the results of the test.

Purpose of Test - The tensile creep characteristics obtained from this test are for use in computing sags and tensions for the design of overhead power lines.

Limitations of Results - It should be recognized by all concerned, both conductor users and producers, that conductor creep obtained from the Test Method herein described is at best an approximation of the actual creep that may result in the conductor in service. Due to the many variations in manufacturing, installation and service conditions, such as temperature variations, variations in electrical loading, variations in ice and wind loadings, variations in pretensioning, etc., precise values of creep that will occur in service in a particular conductor are impractical to predict. Test results obtained by this method will be of sufficient accuracy for use in sag-tension calculations for most installations operating at typical conditions.
