Scope:

INTRODUCTION

The M700 series of computers is based on the architecture and instruction set of the Ferranti Argus 700 computer series. Both M700 computers and Argus 700 computers have a common overall instruction set. However, particular models do not necessarily implement the complete instruction set.

M700 includes a range of computers which are all based on the same architectural features and instruction set ensuring a high level of compatibility and interchangeability. in hardware and software terms. Within these limits there exist different implementations from more than one manufacturer to reflect specific commercial and application requirements.

In order that compatibility is retained in the future, the Defence Standard defines in PART 1 the basic specification which is common to all M700 computers. PART 2 defines a specific class of M700 for which implementations exist and further parts define other specific classes. This structure has been adopted for the Defence Standard to allow for future requirements which might arise to embrace new features and technological advances. Hence any particular M700 computer will be defined as meeting
