Scope:

Purpose: This standard provides a list of graphic symbols and class designation letters for use on electrical and electronics diagrams.

Definition and Use: Graphic symbols for electrical engineering are a shorthand used to show graphically the functioning or interconnections of a circuit. A graphic symbol represents the function of a part in the circuit.1 Graphic symbols are used on single-line (one-line) diagrams, on schematic or elementary diagrams, or, as applicable, on connection or wiring diagrams. Graphic symbols are correlated with parts lists, descriptions, or instructions by means of designations.

The class designation letter portion of a reference designation is for the purpose of identifying an item by category or class, using a class letter as defined in Section 22 of this standard. The assignment of the reference designation should be in accordance with American National Standard Reference Designations for Electrical and Electronics Parts and Equipment, Y32.16-1975 (IEEE Std 200-1975).

1 For example, when a lamp is employed as a nonlinear resistor, the nonlinenr resistor symbol is used. For reference designation information, see Section 22 of this standard.
