Scope:

This standard shall contain minimum requirements for a fire service–related occupational safety and health program.

Purpose.

The purpose of this standard shall be to specify the minimum requirements for an occupational safety and health program for a fire department.

This standard shall specify safety requirements for those members involved in rescue, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials operations, special operations, and related activities.

The authority having jurisdiction shall identify which performance objectives of this standard existing programs or policies meet.

Nothing herein shall be intended to restrict any jurisdiction from exceeding these minimum requirements.

NASA Lessons:
  • This lesson pertains to a recommendation that every program/project should have an ON-LINE well-maintained risk management DATABASE SYSTEM for identifying, tracking, and retiring project risks. The standard on-the-other-hand deals with a risk management PLAN and risk management FACTORS along with training pertaining to Fire Departments. The lesson could have some value to Risk Management understanding in paragraphs 4.2, 4.7, 8.2, Annex A - A4.2.1, A4.7.2, A8.2.2, Annex B - B3.2.2, Annex C - Figure C.1 and Annex D of the NFPA standard.
