This document provides design guidelines for tactile symbols and letters used for information and marking for people who need non-visual or non-auditory information. It is applicable to products, facilities and equipment of housing and transportation, services, and packages, which use tactile symbols and letters.

This document specifies physical characteristics of tactile symbols and letters for ease of legibility by touch taking into account human abilities of tactile sense and their aging effect. It does not specify semantic characteristics of tactile symbols and letters.

This document is applicable to tactile symbols and letters of convex-type touched by fingers.

This document does not apply tactile symbols and letters specifically coded such as Braille, nor those with vibration or temporal changes.
