Dieser Teil 1 der Internationalen Normenreihe IEC 62287 legt die Mindest-Betriebs- und -Leistungsanforderungen, die Prüfverfahren und geforderten Prüfergebnisse für Geräte der Klasse B des automatischen Identifikationssystems (AIS) mit Zeitmultiplexzugriffstechnik mit Aktivitätserkennung (CSTDMA) auf Schiffen fest. Soweit anwendbar berücksichtigt dieses Dokument andere zugehörige Internationale und bestehende nationale Normen.

Die Norm ist anwendbar für AIS-Geräte, die auf Schiffen genutzt werden, für die nach SOLAS, Kapitel V keine Verpflichtung zum Einsatz von AIS besteht.

Eine AIS-Station, die nur für den Empfangsbetrieb vorgesehen ist, fällt nicht unter mobile AIS-Station der Klasse B für Schiffe.
