AIM

The aim of this NATO standardization agreement (STANAG) is to establish the World Magnetic Model (WMM) as the preferred model of the Earth's magnetic field for use in military systems, to standardize how it is used, and to standardize the way in which magnetic information is supplied on geographic products. In addition, to respond to the following interoperability requirements.

INTEROPERABILITY REQUIREMENTS

The WMM is a standard model of the core and large-scale crustal magnetic field, a cornerstone to enable a "operating off the same map" navigational capability. Navigation either using a personal compass or any Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) requires some knowledge of the effective of the Earth's magnetic field. The WMM provides the user or system with that knowledge. The effect varies with location and through time, as multiple magnetic models could be used it is necessary to standardise the magnetic field model so that geographic products are consistent.
