Applicability and Scope
Applies to all Navy Medicine personnel, contractors, and visitors that enter Navy Medicine facilities or have access to Navy Medicine Information.
Applies to all commercial wireless devices, services, and technologies including voice and data capabilities that operate either as part of or in conjunction with Navy Medicine's unclassified information technology systems or networks. This includes, but is not limited to, commercial wireless devices devices, such as: portable electronic devices (PED), notebook, cellular "smart" telephones, tablet PCs, personal digital assistants (PDA), audio/video recording devices, scanning devices, remote sensors, messaging devices, and any other commercial wireless devices capable of storing, processing, or transmitting information.
Does not apply to cellular technologies (2.5G, 3G, 4G, IEEE 802.15.1, Bluetooth, zigbee, proprietary radio frequencies, IEEE 802.16d/e, WIMAX, and Infrared) which are also addressed in reference (c). Additionaly, receive-only pagers, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, hearing aids, pacemakers, or other personal life support systems are omited from inclusion in this intruction.
For any commercial wireless devices, services, or technology that operates in proximity to information Systems (IS) and/or Sensitive Compartmented Information Faciities (SCIF) to which Director of Central Intelligence Directive (DCID) 6/9 and DCID 6/3 apply, other requirements beyond the scope of this intruction may apply.
Purpose
To establish policy and guidance for Navy Medicine governing the use of commercial wireless devices ,services, and technologies consistent with established Department of Navy (DON) and Department of Defense (DOD) standards of operation.
To specify authentication, encryption, certification and accreditation parameters ensuring security of the Navy Medicine WLAN environment, including mobile and wireless client devices.
To assign responsibilities within Navy Medicine for the evaluation, registration and implementation of secure WLAN solutions.
To enhance the enterprise network capabilities of Navy Medicine consistent with references (a) through (p), through secure application of commercial standards-based WLAN devices, services, and technologies.
