Introduction
This Track Work Instruction covers the maintenance of the many types of guard rail on the network.
They are usually found on viaducts and bridges and they are intended to reduce the risk of a derailed vehicle hitting parapets.
There are many design patterns used throughout the network. Many types use obsolete components that may be difficult to repair or replace.
Guard rail assemblies must be kept in good condition as they may have to withstand the considerable forces involved when a train derails. A loose assembly will make matters worse if it comes adrift under derailment impact.
