Introduction

This Track Work Instruction covers how to provide manual assistance to an S&C tamper.

There is a common belief that because tampers are big powerful machines they are able to work without assistance. This is not true! It is important to understand what they can and cannot do.

Tampers are expensive machines that have to be used correctly. Track possessions obtained to enable them to work can be difficult to arrange.

For this reason it is essential that every provision is made to enable them to carry out the maximum amount of work. Therefore, you should provide the correct support both before they arrive and when they are working in order to make sure that they are used as efficiently as possible.
