Introduction

This Track Work Instruction covers what you should look for when inspecting rail.

It is better to inspect in the dry than the wet because wet rail can conceal some defects.

It details the way you can look at rail in a structured ay so you can recognise various types of defect in the course of a routine track inspection. You may need to seek advice in order to find out what exactly is the problem.

Do not guess! Read a copy of the Network Rail 'Rail Failure Handbook'. This provides much detail on a wide range of defects.
