Introduction

This Track Work Instruction covers in broad detail how to install S&C or plain line using gantries with the trade names PUMs, PLUMs, PEMs and LEMs.

Definitions of the various types of these machines can be found at the end of this instruction.

These machines are powered units that can lift an element of track and move it in the following ways: -

• Crabbing sideways using hydraulic outriggers

• Along the track on rail wheels

• Forward or backwards on a temporary lightweight track laid on a prepared ballast bed

The number of units required depends on the amount of track to be moved.
