scope:

DEFSTAN 00-102 describes the standards supported by the Defence Spatial Data Infrastructure. These standards are the nationally and internationally agreed formats maintained and supplied by the respective SGCs . All Defence platforms and systems should consume these standards direct from the appropriate SGC unless a formal exemption has been granted by the FGB on behalf of DCI3. Compliance with these standards is not always easy; increasingly, single Service platforms require geospatial information to enable them to support or be supported by other services - aeronautical information, designed for an RAF aircraft is also required for a Royal Navy Destroyer's combat system for example. In addition to a joint and allied military context, Defence is increasingly operating across government in support of national security or national resilience tasks. The ability to be interoperable in this context is of equal importance.

The lifetime of some platforms will not correspond with particular formats as supporting technology evolves. This new edition of DefStan 00-102 not only directs particular preferred formats and standards, but also attempts to indicate the lifecycle of those standards so that Project Teams are better able to manage and respond to change in the supplied formats.
