Scope and purpose
This technical report documents the work done to date on the preparation of a standard covering line-break detection. The work accomplished thus far is not sufficient to be issued as a standard; nevertheless it is desired to make the information available to the industry.
This technical report describes a method to detect a break in the metallic loop between the Network interface and the first network element. The method is intended to be used on analog voicegrade switched access lines that use loop-start signaling. The loop break is reported by the network is referred to as the Network and the customer premises wiring and equipment as the Customer Installation (CI) (see Figure 1). The interface between the Network and the CI is referred to as the Network interface (NI). The NI is the same as the interface defined in Part 68 of the FCC Rules and Regulations [3]. This technical report is formulated on the assumption that the customer premises equipment and wiring meet the technical requirements of the FCC Rules.
