scope:
a) This Defence Standard defines the requirements for the design and manufacture of portable fire extinguishers including discharge hoses, distribution horns, nozzles, connectors, shock support brackets and stowage brackets.
b) Portable fire extinguishers are to be suitable for use in the environments likely to be experienced on HM Surface Ships, Submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliaries (RFAs) and Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service (RMAS) craft whilst berthed or at sea.
c) Materials used in the manufacture of portable fire extinguishers and associated parts are to take into consideration the material toxicity implications for HM Submarines covered by the Submarine Materials Toxicity Database (SMTD) associated with BR 1326.
d) Shock support brackets as defined in this Defence Standard are a Naval Stores item to be drawn off against the latest NATO Stock Number (NSN).
e) Other stowage brackets as defined in this Defence Standard for use on board RFA and RMAS vessels are to be of the approved vehicle or transport rapid release type and may be drawn off against the latest NATO Stock Number (NSN).
f) Specific extinguisher medium and propellant requirements are detailed in BS EN 3-7.
g) Portable fire extinguishers are to be operable upright or up to a maximum of 30° from the vertical in accordance with this Defence Standard and BS EN 3-7.
