This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for ethanol-containing fuels with ethanol as principal component which are used in motors designed to be run on ethanol. In general, such fuels are designated with the code E85.

In accordance with the Biokraftstoffquotengesetz (Biofuels Quota Law) [4], the ethanol content of this fuel can be in the range between approximately 70 % (V/V) and approximately 86 % (V/V), depending on the season's climatic conditions.

NOTE For the purposes of this standard, % (m/m) and % (V/V) are used to represent the percentage by mass and the percentage by volume respectively.
