Sleeve, Protection, for Cable and Harness Protection

Procurement specification is principally for defining protection sleeves on a cable or group of electrical/fiber optic wires (wiring bundle). Single wire protection depends on the minimum diameter of the wire. Sleeve may be used to protect a wire bundle for a platform installation or for repair of installed damaged jacket or jacket/shielded wire bundles. Refer to AS50881 for aerospace wire bundle protection installations.
Temperature Operation Range
The sleeve temperature range is -60 to +175 °C/+200 °C/+240 °C/+260 °C depending on material and is defined in the detail specification. Mechanical properties may be reduced with increasing temperature.

This specification covers the application of external wire bundle protection on new uninstalled designs or the repair and additional protection of a cable, harness or wire bundle with protective sleeve in installed designs. Significant coverage of the installed cable, harness, or wire bundle should not be performed without taking the following into consideration.
a. Design control authority.
b. Temperature rated sleeve compared to the rated temperature of the wire, cable, or bundle being covered.
c. For installed wire bundles, the jacket repair or scrape abrasion sleeve is intended to be used only as a localized application where the cable or bundle jacket or hazard areas need further protection. The wrapping of a sleeve over significant portions of the bundle surface may affect previous engineering design such as internal temperature rise of the bundle especially at altitude, etc. Use of the sleeve for complete protection of a significant portion or all the bundle area requires engineering considerations not addressed by this specification.
d. Sleeve is not intended for fire zone application without engineering consideration.
e. The sleeve with an internal shield may be used as a localized application where the shielded cable has been damaged, but using it extensively for electromagnetic or radio interference protection on installed wire groups requires engineering design control.
f. Sleeves with a shield should not be used in fluid exposed areas without engineering considerations.View Less
