Organization: NR
Publication Date: 5 December 2020
Status: active
Page Count: 13
scope:

This policy defines:

a) the principles that control geospatial referencing for all asset classes, geospatial features and other entities, that constitute the operational railway as defined within Network Rail's Asset Strategy and Plans, and Operational policies;

b) the method of geospatial referencing and the master source of location data;

c) how coordinates are captured and the minimum level of accuracy for their capture; and

d) the need for a geospatial master system to allocate unique identification references to allow a ccurate aggregation of an asset's attribute data with its location.

This policy applies to all assets and operational entities that store geospatial or linear locational references.

It does not apply to non-operational assets, such as office equipment, road fleet, or IT equipment, that do not store or refer to location data.

Purpose

This policy mandates requirements to improve Network Rail's geospatial referencing data and provides a structure to accurately capture and reference geospatial data.

By standardisation, it mitigates the risk of inaccuracies and lack of granularity in linear referencing by enabling sites of work to be located accurately.
