scope:
The scope of the SMACNA Food Grade Ductwork and Sheet Metal Guidelines (herein referred to as "guidelines" and "guideline") includes the determination of the necessary construction details for the fabrication and installation of ductwork and sheet metal within the following general scopes, and as further detailed in the guidelines:
A. HVAC ductwork serving food and beverage production process/sanitary areas.
B. Product conveying sanitary tubing/pneumatic conveying (spouting and blow line) utilized in food and beverage processing.
C. Process exhaust utilized in food and beverage processing.
HVAC ductwork serving food and beverage production process/sanitary areas:
A. No-product contact surface
B. Metallic rectangular, round, and flat oval
C. Fabricated using welded seams and other applicable seams selected for the material, pressure classification, food/beverage production process, sanitation process and other construction detail appropriate for the service.
D. From commercial grades of stainless steels as described in Chapter 5.
E. For HVAC ductwork up to 10 in. wg and ducts that do not convey particulates or high temperature air.
F. To be supported at intervals not exceeding 10 ft for rectangular duct and 12 ft for round duct.
G. Listing of rated reinforcements, flanges, fasteners, hangers and supports, and the methods for selecting them for specific duct sizes, duct weights and applications.
Product conveying sanitary tubing/pneumatic conveying (spouting and blow line) utilized in food and beverage processing:
A. Product contact surface
B. Metallic rectangular and round
C. Fabricated using welded seams and other applicable seams selected for the material, pressure classification, particulate conveyed, food/beverage production process, sanitation process and other construction detail appropriate for the service.
D. From commercial grades of stainless steels as described in Chapter 5.
E. For ductwork constructed up to and over 10 in. wg, positive pressure or negative pressure, and ducts conveying particulates or elevated temperature air.
F. To be supported at intervals not exceeding 30 ft. when following SMACNA Industrial Duct Construction Standards.
G. Listing of rated reinforcements, flanges, fasteners, hangers and supports, and the methods for selecting them for specific duct sizes, duct weights and applications.
Process exhaust utilized in food and beverage processing:
A. Product contact surface or non-product contact surface

D. From commercial grades of stainless steels as described in Chapter 5.
E. For ductwork constructed up to and over 10 in. wg, negative pressure, and ducts that can convey particulates or elevated temperature air.
F. To be supported at intervals not exceeding 30 ft. when following SMACNA Industrial Duct Standards.
G. Listing of rated reinforcements, flanges, fasteners, hangers and supports, and the methods for selecting them for specific duct sizes, duct weights and applications.
