This part of Defence Standard 02-729 defines the minimum requirements for methods of detection of surface discontinuities in ferrous and non-ferrous materials using liquid penetrant examination techniques. This Defence Standard has been specifically designed to reference British Standards directly. BS EN ISO Standards will be used to cover procedures and methods to be used for the Quality Assessment of Liquid Penetrant Examining Authorities and for the liquid penetrant examination of welded and brazed joints, cast and wrought materials, weld metal cladding, pipes and tubes in HM Submarines and Surface Ships not in Class.
The requirements of this Defence Standard (Def Stan) are applicable to all items for which specifications, standards, drawings, refit or repair instructions require liquid penetrant examination. It is also applicable to the Quality Assessment of Examining Authorities who perform liquid penetrant examination.
The extent to which liquid penetrant examinations are required is not included herein but will be found in the relevant Contract Documents.
The Def Stan does not contain acceptance criteria for defects and does not apply to the examination of nuclear plant and machinery.
