scope:
This part of Defence Standard 02-729 specifies the minimum requirements for methods of detection of surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials using magnetic particle examination techniques. It applies to all items for which specifications, standards, drawings or refit / repair instructions require magnetic particle examination.
The Defence Standard (Def Stan) is also applicable to the Quality Assessment of Examining Authorities who perform magnetic particle examination. The extent to which magnetic particle examination is required is not included herein but will be found in the relevant Contract Documents.
The Def Stan does not contain acceptance criteria for defects and does not apply to the examination of nuclear plant and machinery.
This Def Stan has been specifically designed to reference British Standards directly. BS EN ISO Standards will be used to cover procedures and methods to be used for the Quality Assessment of Magnetic Particle Examining Authorities and for the magnetic particle examination of welded and brazed joints, cast and wrought materials, weld metal cladding, pipes and tubes in HM Submarines and Surface Ships not in Class. Unless otherwise specified in this Def Stan, the technical requirements of BS EN ISO 9934-1, -2 and -3 are to apply to all magnetic particle examinations and inspections required by the Design Authority.
