Preface

This is the first volume of six Geotechnical Special Publications (GSPs) containing papers from the 2022 GeoCongress: State of the Art & Practice in Geotechnical Engineering, held in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 20-23, 2022. This conference is the second GeoCongress in this burgeoning conference series which serves as the venue for the Terzaghi, Peck, and Seed Lectures, numerous invited lectures on selected topics addressing the state of the art and practice, and many technical sessions, panel sessions, short courses, and the student competitions comprising the GeoChallenge.

This volume includes one collection that may fall within the general field of soil improvement, with topics ranging from rigid inclusions and stone columns, soil stabilization, bio-grouting and bio-inspired solutions, geosynthetics, and innovative geomaterials and methods.

This and the other volumes in this proceedings represents the two-year effort by the technical planning committee that was charged with the task of continuing the strong tradition of organizing and executing the annual meeting of the Geo-Institute. The call-for-papers was distributed internationally and resulted in 899 submissions. Following a rigorous peer review process in which each paper was subjected to technical review by two or more independent peer reviewers, in which acceptance required concurrence by at least two peer reviewers, a total of 383 papers were accepted and presented in the technical sessions. Owing to this rigorous process, all accepted papers are eligible for applicable ASCE Awards.

The success of this conference and proceedings would not have been possible without the participation and collaboration of many individuals, including the tireless staff at the Geo-Institute: Barbara Curtis, Elizabeth Cuscino, Erin Harrover, Lucy King, Krystina Scott, and Tatiana Vlasova. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Session Chairs and Reviewers, who responded rapidly to the call to service and provided exceptional peer reviews within a very short time period. This is particularly remarkable given the constraints that continued to be imposed upon us all during the age of the pandemic. We are heartened by the resilience of our professional community that will serve us well as we continue to adapt to changing societal and climatic conditions.
