The statutory requirements of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions and other Regulations detailed in Specification for Highway Works series 1200 apply to signs and road markings on public roads. They do not necessarily apply to private roads, though to avoid ambiguity in meaning and interpretation the guidance should be followed wherever possible.
The advice of the local highway authority should be sought with regard to traffic signs and road markings on public highways
