This Network Rail standard:
- defines the application of a TAWS system;
- describes the specification of warning/protection to be provided;
- describes the user Interface for controls and equipment to be provided ;
- specifies the design rules for the implementation of a system.
This Network Rail standard applies to all new fixed Train Activated Warning Systems (TAWS)
A fixed TAWS is one which is permanently installed and connected to the signalling system
This standard also applies where an existing system needs to be amended or the signalling in the area is amended
Purpose
Fixed train activated warning systems enable staff to:
a) Cross the line,
b) Work in areas with restricted visibility,
c) Work where extra time is required to reach a position of safety.
