Organization: NR
Publication Date: 3 March 2012
Status: active
Page Count: 20
scope:

This Network Rail standard specifies a scanning process for hard copy records and other documentation.

It applies to the scanning and cataloguing of records and other documentation managed by Network Rail when the issues of authenticity, integrity and usability are important.

It includes hard copy documentation captured on the following media:

a) paper - linen - tracing;

b) photographs;

c) microfilm - 16 mm, 35 mm, 70 mm, Aperture Cards, roll film, microfiche.

This standard is not applicable to:

a) scanning undertaken simply to provide an electronic copy for reference where it is not intended to be a formal, permanent electronic record.

b) the vectorisation of drawings.

A summary of the scanning of different document types is provided as Table 3.

NOTE For specialist advice contact the NRG.Enquiries@NetworkRail.co.uk

Purpose

Large quantities of Network Rail's records collection remain, as they were created, in hard copy. This is particularly the case with Engineering documentation such as drawings.

These drawings are progressively being scanned to enable the image to be loaded and viewed on electronic systems such as CCMS and eB.

This standard provides a process to enable any future scanning activity to be carried out consistently and according to corporately-agreed principles.
