Scope and purpose
The objective of this Guide is to assist in the correct implementation of the fibre optic interface standards. Recommendations of good practice are also provided. Aspects of system testing are included to assist in confirmation that the requirements of appropriate standards are being met.
Warning
This standard calls for the use of substances and/or test procedures that may be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only to technical suitability and in no way absolves either the supplier or the user from statutory obligations relating to health and safety at any stage of manufacture or use (also see chapter 7).
Particular attention is drawn to the following hazards although the list may not necessarily be exhaustive.
(a) Optical fibre when used as part of an optical system, may emit/produce potentially hazardous radiation.
(b) Care should be taken when handling optical fibre, to prevent it puncturing the skin, especially in the area of the eyes.
(c) Direct viewing of the end of an optical fibre or a terminated fibre must not be attempted while it is connected to an operational source.
(d) In addition to these recommendations, particular attention is drawn to the reference in BS 9230; 1986 Appendix D to "Safety aspects of optical fibre systems for telecommunications".
