This NES defines:
Standard rules for the universal digital representation of data parameters.
Standard units of measure.
Standard methodology for the development of application unique data parameter formats.
This NES applies to all intra-ship digital data transmissions between processing devices of shipboard tactical control and data handling systems. A representative list of parameters is given in TABLE 2.1.
The rules for data parameter representation defined in this NES implement a universal, byte-oriented method of coding digital information which permits the transfer of information between any N-byte word length processing devices (the word-length of the devices is not necessarily equal). The rules specify the development of the format for transmission of individual parameters. (See NES 1026 Part 2 for usage guidance.)
The rules do not indicate the arrangement of any sequence of parameters, ie organization of messages. The description of the parameter formats developed using this NES, and the organised arrangement of a sequence of parameters into a data message is covered in NES 1028 Part 1.
This NES is based closely upon, and is intended to be fully compatible with, the NATO standard for the digital representation of shipboard parameters, STANAG 4222.
STANAG 4222 includes options for a reference key and for alphanumeric identifiers. For UK Naval engineering purposes, these two options are not implemented in this NES.
Future modifications and up-dates applicable to STANAG 4222 will be considered for inclusion in this NES, and, if applicable, will be incorporated by NES amendment procedures. However, where any conflict or interpretation doubt may exist, this NES is to be taken as the authoritative document for UK Naval engineering purposes.
