This specification relates to an air drying paint system used to protect aromatic polyamide fibre from the effects of ultraviolet light and humidity and used as an external finish on certain types of ammunition.
The paint system will normally consist of two or three coats of black paint applied wet-on-wet to produce a dry film thickness of 30 ± 5 μm, followed by two or three coats of a contrasting colour applied wet-on-wet to produce a total dry film thickness for the system of 60 ± 5 μm.
The dry paint film is required to be a safe material when in contact with ammunition or magazines, workshops and similar environments. This property will be assessed by the Approving Authority on the basis of the composition details submitted, supplemented as necessary by special tests. Advice pertaining to this requirement should be sought from the Director, Propellants, Explosives and Rocket Motor Establishment, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
