This document establishes the verification requirements for the Single locker Thermal Enclosure System (STES) flight hardware and its Ground Support Equipment (GSE). These requirements are the basis for a verification program that will demonstrate that the STES satisfies safety, interface, and performance requirements. These verification requirements will ensure the STES capacity to perform ground processing at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and/or Dryden and mission objectives while located in the Shuttle Middeck, Spacehab, and/or ISS. For shuttle operations, the STES will be launched in the middeck or Spacehab and for Station operations, the STES will be installed in an Expedite the Processing of Experiments to Space Station (EXPRESS) Rack in the US Lab.

Compliance with safety, interface, and performance verification requirements will ensure that the STES can be installed in both the Shuttle Middeck and the EXPRESS Rack. Verification activities include demonstration, testing, inspection, and analysis. The majority of these requirements will be verified at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC); however, because the STES is a late-load experiment (Launch minus 24 hours), some verification requirements must be completed at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

The STES will be verified to the specific safety and interface design requirements contained in NSTS 1700.7 & ISS Addendum, KHB 1700.7, NSTS-21000-IDD-MDK, MDC91W5023K, and SSP 52000-IDD-ERP. The STES will have its performance verification requirements certified via the STES CEI Spec, 97M24482. In order to satisfy these requirements, this document addresses the following disciplines: electrical, electromagnetic, command and data handling, environmental, mechanical, structural, thermal, materials, human factors, performance, safety (including fire detection and suppression), and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).

Each Verification Requirement Definition Sheet (VRDS) is set up to accommodate requirements originating from the Shuttle Middeck, the EXPRESS Rack, or the Spacehab. In conjunction with each one of these requirements is a block devoted to the CEI Spec requirements. Verification compliance data shall be submitted based on the current manifest. In other words, if the hardware is planned for ascent in the Shuttle Middeck, flight operations in the EXPRESS Rack, and descent in the Shuttle Middeck, then verification compliance data shall be submitted to satisfy both interfaces. Should there be conflict between a CEI Spec requirement and another requirement block, the more stringent of the two requirements shall be met.

This verification requirements document was prepared and submitted by the Program Development branch, Teledyne Brown Engineering, Contract # NAS8-00205, in accordance with Marshall Work Instruction (MWI) 8050.1, Revision B, Effective Date March 6, 2000.

All Changes to this document must be approved by the Level III Configuration Control Board (CCB). This document is prepared for and controlled by the MSFC Biotechnology Carriers (BiC) Project Manager (SD45).
