Appliances n ot intended f or normal household use, but which nevertheless may be a s ource of d anger to the public, s uch as a ppliances intended foruse by laymen in s chools, offices, shops and similar locations are within the scope of this standard.

As f ar a s practicable, t his standard d eals with the common hazards p resented by appliances which are encountered by a ll persons in and a round the home. However, in g eneral, it d oes not take into account

- persons (including children) whose

• physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
• lack of experience and knowledge

prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;

- children playing with the appliance.

NOTES 102 Attention is drawn to the fact that

- for appliances i ntended to be used in vehicles or o n board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;

- in m any c ountries additional r equirements are specified by the national health a uthorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, and similar authorities.

- IEC 60598-1 is applicable as far as is reasonable.

NOTE 103 This standard does not apply to:

- LCD and video projectors (IEC 60065);

- micrographic office equipment (IEC 60950);

- motion picture projectors for films having a width exceeding 16 mm;

- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);

- appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601).
