The guideline VDI 4480 Part 2 applies to warehouse types with load-bearing racks. The goods are stored in and/or retrieved from the storage locations by automatic operating systems (e.g. storage and retrieval systems). These storage and retrieval systems (RBS) are not bound to a warehouse lane (rack aisle) but can change between different warehouse lanes. This aisle change can be achieved using different technologies (e.g. storage and retrieval systems with transfer devices or curve-going storage and retrieval systems).

The guideline also applies to warehouse systems with so-called mobile rack systems if these operate automatically. It takes account of multiple input and output points (EPs and APs). The RBS can take up, input, or output one or more transport units (TEs) at a time, (single or multiple load capacity). There may also be a arrangement of multiple RBS.

Purpose of this guideline

The great variety of modern storage systems and technologies makes it very difficult to choose the optimum system for a given task. The throughput is one of the most important characteristic values in this connection. The throughput allows a comparison of the efficiency even of different storage systems and technologies. A comparison between different systems and technologies, however, calls for a standardized analysis method.

The series of guidelines VDI 4480 establishes the conditions for this. With the help of these guidelines, the throughput of a storage system can be both calculated mathematically (e.g. in the planning phase) and verified in practice (e.g. during a final inspection procedure). As the framework conditions are precisely defined, a standardised starting point is established. These framework conditions are the same for all types of warehouse, thereby allowing comparability.

The guideline is equally useful for the planner, the manufacturer and the operator of a storage system and helps to objectify the assessment of warehouse systems.
