Introduction

The ASHRAE Datacom Series along with the ASHRAE Handbook series are important references for those seeking to understand how data center cooling systems are designed and the methods used to optimize those cooling systems (ASHRAE 2015a; 2015b). However, few publications provide useful information to the data center design and owner community describing the information technology equipment (ITE) cooling designs and their interactions with the data center. This book serves to fill this gap through the collective knowledge and experience of ITE thermal engineers, architects, and experts in ITE and data center thermal management.

This book creates a reference for the data center and IT professional covering the following:

• An overview of IT equipment cooling design and thermal management and the differences between servers, storage, and networking equipment (Chapters 2 and 3)

• Power and thermal characteristics trends impacting. data center operation including ΔT (temperature differential across IT equipment) and pressure interactions (Chapter 4)
