Publication Date: 1 March 2016
Status: active
Page Count: 18
scope:

This CP gives a description of the procedures and requirements related to documentation, design and type testing applicable for TA of polyester resin, vinylester resin, gelcoat and topcoat.

This CP does not set the design requirements to the polyester resin, vinylester resin, gelcoat and topcoat. TA is based on compliance with design requirements given in the rules and standards. The CP describes how to document compliance with the requirements in order to obtain a TA certificate for the equipment. This includes, where relevant, technical requirements for how the type tests shall be performed.

This class programme includes requirements for:

resins for structural laminates

resins for fire retardant laminates for use in lifeboats

gelcoats and topcoats

fire retardant gelcoats and topcoats for use in lifeboats.

The approval of polyester and vinyl ester is divided into two different quality grades. Grade 1 and Grade 2 corresponds to grade A and grade B in ISO 12215-1:

Grade 1: Quality with good water resistance.

Grade 2: Quality with normal water resistance.

One type approval certificate will be valid for one quality of the actual product with the possibility to include variants.

For polyester- and vinyl ester resins this means:

Grade: One base resin.

Variants: Different additives such as accelerators and thixotropic agents to modify the resin properties. All variants shall fulfil the requirement to the same grade. Modification to reduce styrene emission is normally considered as a new Grade.

As a minimum, the following properties will be printed in the type approval certificate:

tensile strength

fracture elongation

Barcol hardness

heat deflection temperature (HDT)

water absorption

density

curing procedure used for type testing.

Deviation from the requirements may be accepted on a case-by-case basis and will be stated in the certificate.

One type approval certificate is normally limited to one manufacturer at one production site, however, other arrangements may be agreed with the Society.

Type tests as specified in Sec.2 [3] shall be carried out and verified in one of the following ways:

at a DNV GL laboratory

at a recognized and independent laboratory or a laboratory accepted by DNV GL

at the manufacturer's premises in the presence of a surveyor.
