scope:
The fund is aimed at assisting LU business units to implement environmental initiatives. The fund is not intended to cover environmental initiatives which are considered to be 'business as usual', particularly conforming with legislation. The primary goal is to deliver environmental benefit in any one of the core areas of environmental focus outlined in LU's environmental strategy.
Environmental benefits could be linked to any of the core environmental strategy themes and could therefore relate to:
- Improving resource use and waste management
- Conserving wildlife and habitats
- Improving air quality (including managing dust)
- Managing potential pollution
- Managing noise
- Managing carbon and energy use
This can include a variety of different types of initiatives including facilitating raised awareness and promoting behaviour change.
All types of projects will be considered, although they will be assessed primarily on the proposed environmental benefit they can demonstrate.
• Projects could include: Projects that deliver improved environmental performance in the short to medium term for our buildings, operations or vehicles.
• Projects capable of delivering longer term environmental benefit.
• Projects that individually will deliver smaller environmental benefit but offer excellent awareness-raising or drive wider behavioural change.
Purpose
London Underground plays an important role in managing the environmental impacts of transport in London by providing a service which reduces road congestion and, as a result, carbon emissions and other air pollutants. However we recognise that we must also manage the impact of our operations on the environment. Our vision is to provide London with a truly world class transport system and we consider good environmental performance to be integral to that vision. Our principal environmental objective is to understand, manage and effectively control the impact our business has on the environment
In order to further this, the contract for the distribution of morning papers on the LU network includes an annual environmental contribution. Therefore annually from 2011 - 2016 LU is allocating £10,000 to be spent on environmental initiatives of LU's sole choice.
