Scope and application
This programme is applicable for the approval of material manufacturers of:
Copper alloy castings
as referred in the Society's rules and standards. For a description of general requirements, conditions and procedures related to the approval, please refer to DNVGL CP 0346 which shall be applied in combination with this programme.
The product(s) used for approval testing (see Sec.3) will place limitations on the range of approval. The approval will be limited to each of the following main grouped types of cast copper alloys:
Bronze castings applicable for propellers, separately cast propeller blades and hubs: RU SHIP Pt.2 Ch.2 Sec.11 [3] applies:
Mn-bronze (Cu1)
Ni-Mn-bronze (Cu2)
Ni-Al-bronze (Cu3)
Mn-Al-bronze (Cu4).
Castings for valves, liners, bushes, fittings: RU SHIP Pt.2 Ch.2 Sec.11 [2] applies:
Phosphor bronze
Gunmetal
Leaded gunmetal
Leaded bronze.
Castings for general applications: according to a recognised international standard, e.g.:
Al-bronze
Sn-bronze
Pb-Sn-bronze
Copper-Nickel 90-10
Copper-Nickel 70-30.
Approval may be given for other alloy types not mentioned here however such requests shall include a justification (classification requirement such as rule basis or approved drawing etc.) for seeking approval.
The approval will further be limited to:
casting method
maximum casting weight
maximum section/wall thickness
heat treatment
Approval testing of castings will cover approval of ingots and semis, but not vice versa.
Where copper alloy castings are repaired by welding, the welding shop of the manufacturer shall either be approved for welding in accordance with this programme, or be approved as welding workshop. For welding workshop approval, see DNVGL CP 0352.
Manufacturer's own heat treatment facilities shall be evaluated and approved by the Society either under this approval programme, or as an approved "heat-treatment workshop" through the separate approval programme DNVGL CP 0351.
