This specification covers the requirements for arc welding of wrought and cast carbon and carbon-manganese steels having a carbon equivalent value (CEV) not exceeding 0.54% when calculated using the formula shown in BS 5135 (Note 2). It is primarily for use in the fabrication and repair of traction and rolling stock but may be used for other Railway applications. The specification covers the requirements for operator approval, welding procedures and testing of completed welds. Additional requirements for the repair of cracked, fractured and worn items removed from service are also covered.

Note 2: Spot welding of steel is to be carried out in accordance with BS 1140. Flash-welding is to be carried out in accordance with BS 6944. Aluminium welding is to be carried out in accordance with BS 3019 and BS 3571.
