AIM AND SCOPE

The aim of this standard is to ensure modem to modem interoperability between NATO forces utilising SHF transponding satellite systems. This STANAG is limited to the physical layer of the OSI model excluding the higher levels. This STANAG 4486 specifically addresses those aspects of SHF satcom and non- EPM modems supporting Class B services and which relate to waveform definition and the provision of communication facilities It is intended that this standard be applicable to all geosynchronous SHF satellite systems used by NATO members.

This standard defines the interoperable characteristics of an SHF SATCOM non- EPM modem for medium capacity services defined as Class B in STANAG 4484. It defines a Basic modem with a mandatory, interoperable core mode and a standard mode with various optional features, and in addition, it defines (Annex E) characteristics of an advanced modem, the Enhanced Bandwidth-Efficient Modem (EBEM).
