PREFACE

1. The definitions contained herein do not modify or establish NATO policy and doctrines but help to express them more clearly.

2. The purpose of this Glossary is to enable more effective cooperation between NATO nations, commands, agencies and staffs, and with Partner and other nations, by promoting the use of a common and accurate terminology leading to better mutual understanding.

3. This Glossary has been developed in compliance with C-M(2003)37, the NATO Policy for Terminology Standardization, and the NATO Terminology Programme rules and conventions.

4. This Glossary is published in the two official NATO languages. The terminology contained herein is based on the ISO/IEC Guide 2 jointly promulgated by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission and used as a reference. It has been approved by all NATO nations within the NCS and the terms and definitions are NATO Agreed.
