Organization: DIN
Publication Date: 1 April 2015
Status: active
Page Count: 19
ICS Code (Cellular materials): 83.100
scope:

This standard specifies a non-destructive method to be used to determine the indentation hardness of flexible moulded foams with a minimum thickness of 10 mm. Applying this method, it is possible to express

- the indentation force in Newton, for a defined indentation displacement;

- the indentation displacement in millimetres, for a defined indentation force.

This method is suitable for conducting tests directly on the moulded parts.

The test specified in this standard is not suitable for determining the hardness of extruded profiles that are customarily called sponge rubber or expanded rubber.

This standard specifies only the test method to be employed. The individual test parameters shall be recorded by the parties involved.

Measurement results obtained according to the methods specified in this standard are only valid for the specific moulded parts involved and shall not be compared with results obtained under different testing conditions (e.g. measuring point, indentor, indentation) or with results for other moulded parts. Correlations with characteristics from tests according to different standards (e.g. DIN EN ISO 2439, DIN EN ISO 3386-1 or DIN EN ISO 3386-2) shall be avoided.

It is not permitted to convert the determined forces into compressive stresses by reference to the surface of the used indentors.

This standard is used exclusively for the testing of pre-fabricated parts and differs from the standards DIN EN ISO 2439, DIN EN ISO 3386-1 and DIN EN ISO 3386-2.
