Introduction

Energy codes and ENERGY STAR^® qualification require limiting air infiltration (leakage) through recessed luminaires (fixtures). The goal is to restrict passage of conditioned air and moisture through a recessed luminaire into unconditioned space in order to reduce energy loss and moisture accumulation. Because such luminaires are usually installed in the outer envelope of a building in areas that are provided with thermal insulation, they are also typically rated for insulation contact, but the two requirements are not directly related.

Many codes allow various routes for compliance with this air infiltration requirement:

1) A luminaire construction that passes a test demonstrating limited airflow;

2) Installation of a vapor barrier over the luminaire; or

3) Installation of a sealed box surrounding the luminaire.

This paper will focus on the luminaire construction that passes a test demonstrating limited airflow and will explain the standard test procedure, installation requirements, and labeling applicable to such luminaires. This information is useful for those testing, producing, specifying, installing, and inspecting these luminaires.
