IEC 62940 legt die minimalen betrieblichen und Leistungsanforderungen, technischen Eigenschaften, Prüfverfahren und geforderten Prüfergebnisse für integrierte Kommunikationssysteme (ICS) auf Schiffen fest zur externen Kommunikation vom Schiff und zur Notfall- und sicherheitsrelevanten Kommunikation (GMDSS) und um die Funktionen der Verteilung dieser Kommunikation an Bord zu erbringen. Diese Norm berücksichtigt die IMO-Resolution A.694(17) und ist mit IEC 60945 verbunden. Wenn eine Anforderung der vorliegenden Norm von IEC 60945 abweicht, dann gilt vorrangig die Anforderung der vorliegenden Norm
