Scope:

FOREWORD

The 50th Midyear Meeting of the American Petroleum Institute's Refining Department was held May 13-16. 1985, at the Westin Crown Center and Hyatt Regency Hotels in Kansas City. Missouri. Among the highlights of this Golden Anniversary meeting were ten technical sessions in which papers were presented on subjects as diverse as ultrasonic examination of circumferential welds in pressure vessels and improving productivity with the use of personal computers.

This volume contains 39 of the technical papers presented. They are ordered by session and were typeset from manuscripts prepared by the authors. The papers have been formatted for presentation in this volume, but the material represents the express opinions of the authors. The American Petroleum Institute assures neither the accuracy nor the reliability of the data contained in them. Questions about the technical content of the papers should be directed to the authors.

The Refining Awards Luncheon was held on May 15 to honor E. P Banett, Unocal Corporation; Eugene H. Edwards, Chevron Corporation, and John M. Hopkins. Unocal Corporation. The presiding officer at the luncheon was John L. Locker. Chairman of the General Committee of Refining (Vice President. Refining. Standard Oil Company (Ohio)). After his opening remarks to the members of the Refining Department and their guests. Mr. Locker presented the three API Certificates of Appreciation. The texts of the citations are included in this volume on page v.

The speaker at the 1985 Awards Luncheon was Robert J. Samp. M.D., who is affiliated with the Center for Health Sciences. University of Wisconsin Hospitals.
