The purpose of this standard is to provide general requirements for the marking of raw materials, products and components.

This standard provides general requirements for surface marking on components, component parts and piping for purposes of permanent identification, temporary identification and dimensional layout. Requirements for marking of raw materials as required by material specifications are not superseded * by this standard. In the event of a conflict between the text of this standard and the marking requirements and prohibitions of product and component specifications and welding standards, this standard shall not take precedence.
