scope:
This standard lists failures cause by types of tribological stress. GFT-Arbeitsblatt 7 defines this as the stress acting on the surface of a solid body by contact with and relative movement of another solid, liquid or gaseous body. Tribological stress is also characterised by the fact that mechanical stress causes secondary thermal, tribochemical and physical reactions between the elements of the tribological system involved. This is, therefore, to be considered a separate type of stress alongside the purely mechanical, thermal or chemical (corrosive) types, which acts mainly on the material surface, tapers off toward the inside of the material and is subject to changes over time, at least on a microscopic scale.
The standard is valid for damages done through the action of wear mechanisms. The most important ones include
• adhesion,
• abrasion,
• surface fatigue, and
• tribochemical reaction.
They can occur individually or in combination.
